Madeira Dolphin Species

There are many dolphin species that we see on our tours from the marina in Funchal on the island of Madeira. Some of these species are residents and can be seen all year round, like the Pilot whales and Bottlenose dolphins. Other species of dolphin are migratory like the Common dolphin and the Atlantic Spotted dolphin. We typically see the Common and Striped dolphins when the oceans cool off in late winter and they become two of the most frequently sighted species. During the summers when the oceans around Madeira are warmer our coasts are visited by large pods of Atlantic Spotted dolphins and smaller groups of rough-toothed dolphins. Other species like Orcas, False Killer whales, Risso’s dolphins, Pygmy Killer whales and Melon Headed whales are rarely observed with no discernible sightings patterns.
